This one sits right in town, a minute from the corniche, which is why it is best after dark: floodlit from below, the columns become the backdrop to ordinary Luxor evenings. Only one obelisk still stands at the entrance — its twin has been in Paris since 1836 — and in a side chamber early Christians painted frescoes straight over the pharaonic reliefs, leaving two faiths stacked on one wall.
