An isolated plateau falling sheer to the Dead Sea, where Herod built himself a palace on three terraces clinging to the north face. In AD 73 the last Jewish rebels held out here against the Roman siege; the earth ramp the legions raised to reach the top is still plainly visible from below. Climb the Snake Path before dawn, or take the cable car.
