Fifteen kilometres from Skopje the Treska river slips into a green gorge closed by a 1930s dam, leaving only a cliff-side path and a few medieval monasteries above the water. By boat or kayak you reach Vrelo cave, one of the deepest known underwater sinkholes anywhere. The walls are threaded with climbing routes.
