A Rif mountain town painted entirely blue — walls, steps, the pots hanging beside the doors — and repainted by its residents every spring. There are at least three competing explanations for the colour and none of them quite convinces; what is certain is that walking the steep lanes at seven in the morning, before the coaches arrive, is one of the finest hours Morocco offers.
