Beneath the canyon overhangs the Ancestral Puebloans built entire villages of stone and mortar between 1200 and 1300, with towers, circular kivas and grain stores. Cliff Palace alone holds 150 rooms and is reached by wooden ladders propped against the rock face. Then, within a generation, they left every one of them โ and nobody is certain why.
