Nearly five hundred cells cut into a gravel cliff outside Dunhuang, painted without a break for a thousand years by monks and by the merchants passing along the Silk Road. They hold forty-five thousand square metres of murals and more than two thousand painted clay figures, from colossal Buddhas to flying apsaras across the ceilings. Entry is by guided group with a torch, a few caves at a time.
