The Zapotecs flattened a hilltop four hundred metres above the Oaxaca valley to build a capital on it, with a Great Plaza three hundred metres long and an arrowhead-shaped building aligned to the stars. The Danzantes slabs show contorted figures now read as sacrificed captives. The view down over the valley is half the reason to make the climb.
