The granite spire the Tehuelche called Chaltén, "the smoking mountain", for the cloud permanently snagged on its summit. Its walls are among the most feared in world climbing, but seeing it only takes a walk: from the village of El Chaltén the trail to Laguna de los Tres is a long day out, ending at a tarn directly beneath the face. At dawn the granite turns red for a few minutes.
