The most accessible volcano on earth: a four-wheel-drive takes you almost to the crater rim, and you look in from a few metres away as it explodes every few minutes, flinging glowing lava bombs into the air. After dark the show is almost too much. It has erupted without pause for at least eight hundred years, and for the communities of Tanna it is where the spirits live.
