Five hundred and ten metres by one hundred and sixty, among the largest squares on earth, laid out by Shah Abbas in 1598 as the drawing room of his new capital. Each side holds a different arm of the state: the Imam Mosque, the Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, the Ali Qapu palace and the gate of the Grand Bazaar. At dusk families spread carpets on the lawn and stay until late.
