A caldera twenty kilometres across with walls six hundred metres high, holding twenty-five thousand animals that have no reason to leave: water, grass and salt are there all year. It is the quickest place anywhere to see lions, big-tusked elephants and the handful of black rhino left in northern Tanzania — and Maasai herders still bring their cattle down to graze on the crater floor.
