The mausoleum of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the warlord who unified Japan, is the opposite of Shinto restraint: lacquer, gold and five thousand painted carvings under ancient cedars. This is where the three monkeys — see, hear and speak no evil — live, along with the sleeping cat above the gateway. Past the Yōmei gate, two hundred steps climb through the forest to the tomb itself.
