A maze of pale stone lanes inside medieval walls, holding the Shirvanshahs' Palace and the Maiden Tower, a squat twenty-nine-metre cylinder whose purpose nobody has worked out. Around it the flame-shaped towers and the oil-boom mansions of 1900 make a complete contrast. Soviet films set in the Middle East shot their exteriors right here.
