Four colonial squares linked by narrow streets where restored baroque palaces stand beside facades still held up on props, and 1950s Chevrolets work as taxis. Plaza Vieja has the shaded arcades; Plaza de la Catedral a church built of coral stone full of marine fossils. Towards evening music drifts out of doorways and the Malecón fills with people sitting on the wall.
