The only walled city north of Mexico, perched on the Cap Diamant headland above the St Lawrence. You drop from the upper town to the lower by the Côte de la Montagne or the funicular and land in Place Royale, where the French settled in 1608. Under snow, with the French shopfronts and copper roofs, it reads as a piece of Normandy shifted across an ocean.
