Seventy-five hectares of primary forest spared the chainsaw because Osun, the Yoruba river goddess, lives in it. Among the trees stand shrines and monumental sculptures in concrete and iron, made from the 1960s onward by the Austrian artist Susanne Wenger together with local craftsmen. Each August the festival draws hundreds of thousands from across the Yoruba diaspora.
