An oasis in the Syrian desert that in the 3rd century became a caravan power strong enough to defy Rome under Queen Zenobia. A colonnade over a kilometre long survives, along with the great temple of Bel, the theatre and the funerary towers rising from the surrounding hills. The site was gravely damaged in 2015: some of what stood here is gone.
