The Tiger's Nest clings to a vertical cliff nine hundred metres above the Paro valley, in a place where nothing should be able to stand: whitewashed battered walls, gilded roofs, and nothing but rock underneath. Two or three hours of climbing through pine and rhododendron get you there, prayer flags strung across the path. Fire destroyed it in 1998 and it was rebuilt exactly as it was, around the cave where Padmasambhava is said to have meditated for three years after arriving on the back of a tigress.
