Carol I built his summer residence among Carpathian firs and spared nothing: 160 rooms, carved woodwork to the ceiling, stained glass, and the first electrical system in any European royal palace. The armoury holds Ottoman and Indian suits of armour; the Turkish room is upholstered from floor to chandelier. Outside, statue-lined terraces look down the Sinaia valley.
