The heart of colonial Salvador: cobbled streets climbing steeply between houses painted blue, ochre and pink, and baroque churches lined in gold like São Francisco. But Pelourinho is above all a sound — Olodum's drummers rehearsing in the street on Tuesday nights, capoeira circles in the small squares, the smell of acarajé frying in palm oil. Nowhere is Afro-Brazilian culture more visible.
