The ceremonial capital of the Achaemenids, raised on an artificial terrace at the foot of the mountain. Along the Apadana staircase twenty-three delegations of the empire file past in relief, bearing gifts to the Great King: Indians with gold, Ethiopians with ivory, Armenians leading a horse. Alexander burned it in 330 BC, and the blackened columns are still standing.
