The highest point in Cape Verde is a perfect black cone rising inside a caldera nine kilometres wide, walled vertically on three sides. A few hundred people live on the crater floor, growing vines directly in the lava and making a wine like no other — even though the 2014 eruption buried their villages twice over. The climb takes four hours on ash that slides back under you.
