Thirteen storeys of white and ochre wall climbing the Red Hill, six hundred metres above Lhasa: the winter home of the Dalai Lamas and the emblem of Tibet. Inside, worn wooden staircases lead through a thousand rooms, gilded chapels and the jewelled stupa-tombs of past rulers. Come at dawn, when pilgrims circle the base spinning prayer wheels.
