Indonesia's largest Hindu complex, raised around 850 as an answer to Buddhist Borobudur an hour up the road. Three tall pointed towers — Shiva at the centre at forty-seven metres, Vishnu and Brahma flanking him — stand above a field of two hundred and forty lesser shrines, many still collapsed since the 2006 earthquake. Reliefs along the balustrades tell the Ramayana panel by panel.
