Two hundred Nubian pyramids on three sand hills, steeper and narrower than the Egyptian kind and almost always empty of visitors. These were the tombs of the kings and queens of Kush, who ruled Egypt itself for a century; the chapels built against them keep reliefs of powerfully built queens and inscriptions in Meroitic, an alphabet we still cannot fully read.
