Seventy-three metres of sandstone tapering skyward, banded with Quranic calligraphy and fluting that changes pattern on every storey. It is the tallest brick minaret in the world, begun in 1193 by Delhi's first sultan. At its foot lie the courtyard of India's oldest mosque and an iron pillar that has refused to rust for fifteen centuries.
