The crater that produced almost every moai on Easter Island, and where the work stopped dead. Nearly four hundred statues remain on the slope in every stage of completion: some buried to the neck, others still attached to the bedrock, one twenty-one metres long that was never freed. Nowhere else on the island reads so clearly — a building site abandoned with the tools still lying around.
