Two kilometres of red sandstone walls enclose the palace the Mughals built when they moved their capital to Delhi. Inside are the inlaid white marble halls where the emperor held court, the water channels that once cooled them, and the four-part gardens. Every 15 August the prime minister addresses the country from its ramparts.
