The seat of the Khmer kings since 1866, a yellow-and-gold compound on the riverfront where the Mekong meets the Tonlé Sap. The highlight is the Silver Pagoda: five thousand solid silver tiles underfoot, an emerald Buddha, and a ninety-kilo gold one studded with diamonds. Outside, the red pointed roofs and stone naga are the outline in every photograph of the city.
