Of one of the most ambitious churches in Portuguese Asia only the façade survives, five carved stone tiers standing at the head of a staircase: a fire in 1835 took the rest. The sculpture tells you where you are — angels beside Chinese dragons, a Japanese sailing ship, inscriptions in Chinese. Behind it, a crypt and a museum of sacred art occupy the space where the nave stood.
