Ten thousand square kilometres of flat salt at 3,660 m, all that's left of a prehistoric lake. In the dry season it's a mosaic of white hexagons running to the horizon that destroys any sense of scale; from January to March a film of rainwater turns it into the largest mirror on earth, with the sky lying under your feet. Rocky islands break the surface here and there, bristling with giant cactus.
