A tuff cone that rose out of the sea five thousand years ago at Jeju's eastern tip, its crater open at the top like a grassy bowl six hundred metres across. The climb takes twenty minutes on wooden steps, and the name means 'sunrise peak' — that is what people come for. On the beach below, Jeju's haenyeo free-diving women still work the water without tanks.
