Ninety-nine metres of stupa under sixty tonnes of real gold — plates, not leaf — crowned by an umbrella set with five thousand diamonds. It is the holiest site in Myanmar and is said to hold eight hairs of the Buddha. You climb barefoot up one of four covered stairways onto a platform the size of a public square, full of people praying, sleeping, eating and pouring water over the statues.
