An almost perfect stone circle on the bank of the Dniester, with four round towers and a square one over the gate: the geometry is Italian, and not by accident — Petru Rareș hired Transylvanian architects trained on Renaissance treatises. It was one link in a chain of forts holding the Tatars off Moldavia. Recently restored, it lets you walk the wall-top and look across the river into Ukraine.
