Dunes three hundred metres high, their sand reddened by iron oxide over five million years, close around a white clay pan where the Tsauchab river gives up short of the sea. At Deadvlei the black skeletons of camel-thorn trees that died nine hundred years ago still stand, too dry to rot: black, white, orange and blue, four flat colours that look like a composite photograph.
