White coral-stone houses gone grey with damp, lanes barely an arm's width across, and hundreds of carved teak doors studded with brass: the Indian Ocean kneaded Arabs, Indians, Persians and Swahili into a single town here. You visit the site of the old slave market, drink coffee sitting on someone's steps, and at dusk the Forodhani Gardens stalls grill fish along the seafront.
