The granite block that closes off Guanabara Bay, 396 metres of bare rock that looks deliberately placed. Two cable cars take you up in sequence — the first dates from 1912 and is among the oldest still running — with a stop halfway on Morro da Urca. From the top Rio reads in a single glance: beaches, hillside favelas, and a tiny Christ on Corcovado across the way.
