A sea fortress spread over six islands off Helsinki, with granite ramparts, guns still aimed at the Baltic and a beached wartime submarine you can climb into. Eight hundred people live here, so it is a neighbourhood rather than a museum, fifteen minutes away on the commuter ferry. In summer the lawns between the walls fill with picnics.
