The steel arch Sydneysiders call the Coathanger โ fifty-three thousand tonnes of riveted iron opened in 1932, in the depths of the Depression. You can walk across on the side footway, climb the two hundred steps of the south pylon for the classic view of the Opera House, or take the guided climb to the summit, 134 metres above the water. On New Year's Eve it becomes the launch pad for the fireworks.
