The Liwu river has cut nineteen kilometres of gorge straight through marble, and the white and grey walls rise vertically hundreds of metres above green water. The road runs through tunnels hacked out by hand in the 1950s, opening onto the drop every few bends. The Swallow Grotto and Tunnel of Nine Turns trails are walked wearing a helmet, because of falling rock.
