The black cone that buried Rabaul under a metre of ash in 1994, erasing what had been the most elegant town in the South Pacific and leaving only a few roofs standing. It still smokes and still coughs out bangs audible for kilometres. You approach by boat across the harbour and walk on black sand where the water boils up from underneath.
