Ming and Qing emperors came here to ask heaven for a good harvest, and the whole layout is an argument in numbers: circles for heaven, squares for earth, columns counting seasons and hours. The Hall of Prayer is a cobalt-blue wooden drum thirty-eight metres tall, built without a single nail. At dawn the surrounding park fills with people practising tai chi and singing opera.
