A thirty-metre shaft opened in the lava on the south coast of Upolu, holding emerald seawater linked to the ocean by a submerged tunnel. You go down an almost vertical wooden ladder and swim in a pool walled with ferns, feeling the tide push in and out. Its Samoan name means "giant swimming hole", which is exactly what it is.
