Japan's oldest museum, in Ueno Park: a hundred and twenty thousand objects, about a hundred of them National Treasures. Swords, samurai armour and painted screens are in the Honkan building; the Hōryū-ji Treasures gallery, in a separate glass pavilion, holds three hundred seventh-century Buddhist objects shown in near darkness.
