The fourth national park ever created, gifted to the nation in 1887 by the Māori chief Te Heuheu Tūkino IV so that no one could carve it up. It holds three active volcanoes and New Zealand's most famous day walk, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing: nineteen kilometres past steaming craters, black lava fields and emerald pools. The cone of Ngauruhoe stood in for Mount Doom in the Tolkien films.
