Seat of Congress and the visual anchor of Washington, its white cast-iron dome nearly ninety metres high and copied by dozens of state capitols since. Inside, the Rotunda is frescoed with the Apotheosis of Washington and ringed by the National Statuary Hall collection. Guided tours are free but must be booked, entering through the underground visitor centre.
