The old Hanseatic port on the Daugava, with German merchants' warehouses, the House of the Blackheads rebuilt brick by brick, and St Peter's spire looking out over the whole city. But Riga's real trick lies just outside the walls: the largest concentration of art nouveau architecture anywhere, six hundred buildings, with the façades of Alberta iela covered in masks, sphinxes and screaming faces.
