Eleven rings of laterite pillars up to two and a half metres tall, set over collective burials still only half understood. They belong to the Senegambian megalithic complex — over a thousand circles across Gambia and Senegal, the largest concentration anywhere, in use for more than fifteen hundred years — and Wassu is the best preserved group of them. Visitors still balance small stones on the pillar tops, as people always have.
