The royal chapel inside the Grand Palace walls, and the holiest temple in Thailand: it houses the Emerald Buddha, a green jade figure just sixty-six centimetres tall whose robes only the king may change, three times a year with the seasons. In the cloister, a hundred and seventy-eight painted panels tell the whole Ramakien. No monks live here — it is the country's only temple without a community.
