The last accessible stretch of the retaining wall Herod built around the Temple platform, destroyed by Rome in AD 70. It is Judaism's holiest place of prayer: you cross the plaza, approach with your head covered and slip notes into the cracks between the stones. On Friday evening, as Shabbat begins, the square fills with singing.
